Beginning a Learner’s Journey…

What to expect from the moment you receive a new student

Congratulations on your new student!

The Confirmation of Assignment email will have important details including: class number, student contact information, approved hours, and deadline. We recommend you save this email for future reference.

Make a great first impression!

Your student is excited to hear from you within 24 hours. Try emailing and/or calling your student too! We are here to help if you don't receive a reply within 48 hours. Please check out the First Impressions section below for some great ideas.

Your first lesson is coming up!

As soon as you and your student agree on the date and time, schedule the first lesson in GLTEngage.

Did you know?

For virtual lessons, students prefer to receive a recurring meeting invite as soon as possible. This way the meeting automatically appears on their calendar and reserves the lesson time.

For in-person lessons, it is important to confirm the address with the student. Many of our students stay in hotels or temporary housing when they first arrive to their host country or they may choose to meet at a coffee shop.

Ready to meet your student?

The first lesson is for determining your student's level, their goals, and their interests! You'll also take some time to tell them about you and about how you will plan their lessons to help them reach their goals.

It's time to submit your lesson!

Now that the first lesson is complete, confirm and submit it in GLTEngage as soon as possible. We hope you enjoyed meeting your student! Please let us know how it went or if you need any help submitting the lesson! Our Customer Success team talks to each student about their first few lessons and this feedback is very helpful.

Did you know?

There are so many benefits to submitting your lessons right after they happen:

  • There will be an accurate count of remaining hours in GLTEngage for you, the student, and Global LT

  • Our clients will receive accurate reporting of used hours and will be able to make quicker decisions about deadline extensions and additional hours approvals for students

  • You will have more time to ask for help if you have any technical issues when submitting

  • Your student will have more time to approve the lessons

We thank all teachers who are scheduling early and submitting directly after the lessons!

First Impressions

Best "Meet & Greet" Email Showcase

As we all know, our GLT teachers are not only experts in teaching, but also stellar communicators making a long-lasting positive first impression. We have been delighted to see some wonderful “first impression” emails written by various teachers. They represent your passion, care, creativity and professionalism so well! Below you will find a quick sample of a few of them.

We’d love to see more of these gems if you are willing to share! Please send an example of your unique introductory email to talentsuccess@global-lt.com by Mar. 31st.

We will reward and honor two winners who inspire us in the next edition of our newsletter. We look forward to hearing from you!

This teacher inspires by sharing her impressive background!

"My name is Stella van Gils and I am to be your Dutch language teacher.  I am a native Dutch speaker, and I have been teaching Dutch for over 20 years.  During this time, I have taught beginner to advanced levels in corporate environment but also as a volunteer, helping refugees and newcomers to the Netherlands.  I have always enjoyed teaching, especially when working with individual students or small group."

These two greetings make us smile!

“My name is Eleanor Howard.  Friends call me Ellie.  Please call me Ellie.  I will be your ESL teacher from Global-LT.”

“I got some good news today – that you are my new student!”

Students really appreciate emails that demonstrate professionalism, enthusiasm, and clarity by incorporating the key points below:

  • Warm and personalized greetings

  • Introduce yourself – students love to learn about their teachers!

  • Learners appreciate seeing the first lesson date and regular schedule

  • It’s a good idea to confirm the in-person class location and/or virtual platform by providing a meeting invite (i.e. a scheduled recurring zoom meeting link) that will automatically sync with the student’s calendar

  • When a teacher acknowledges their students learning goals and preferences, it makes them feel confident

  • An explanation of the purpose of the first meeting and general plan of the first lesson will help learners know what to expect

  • Offering ways to guide and help students with their language learning journey whenever possible

Engage Students On The Go

During the summer months, holidays, or for many other reasons, your students might not be able to take full length lessons at times. We wanted to provide a list of innovative ideas to help you keep your learners engaged, even if they only have 30 minutes.

Many students may return to their home country or take a vacation and they will be in a relaxed mindset; here are some creative and casual lesson ideas that match:

Show & Tell

Students can show and describe their hours, vacation rental, hometown, family, and friends, etc. through a video call or pictures.

Storytelling (children)

A 3-minute story time for younger children with pictures and interaction with the teacher.

Game Night

Select a game to promote fun learning and interaction such as Scattegories, Hedbandz, Tutti Frutti, Apples to Apples, Pictionary, Charades, etc.

Optional: Include the students' friends & family for added fun!

Sports Event

Watch sporting events with your students and enjoy a fun discussion! Talk about favorite athletes from their home country and more.

Weekly Coffee Break

30 minutes weekly to catch up with your student about the previous week's activities.

Book Club

Choose a great book and discuss one chapter a week.

Target Language Challenge

Challenge your students to see how they can use the target language in their hometown or on vacation and have a lesson at the end of each week to discuss the findings.

Phone Practice Lessons

Role-play various types of phone calls with the students. Some examples include making a reservation, ordering at a restaurant, making an appointment at a doctor's office, or calling the child's school.

Scavenger Hunt

Give your students a list of things they need to find and discuss their findings. Change up the difficulty based on your student's level.

Examples of things to find: Something that floats, twists, makes noise, has wheels, sticks, you can fold, turn, etc.

Did you know Global LT offers monthly round tables for teachers?

Join our Round Table discussion on the third Friday of each month at 9:00 am US ET/14:00 UK. Teachers from all over the world gather to discuss a variety of topics within the world of language and culture learning. The sessions are mostly in English, but all languages are welcome!

Language Experiences

We are excited about the continued growth and enthusiasm for our Language Experiences!  Many thanks to all of you who have been supporting and encouraging your students to register and participate.

Experiences have been helping students gain confidence and proficiency in their target language while doing something they love.  They are an immersive and experiential form of learning, allowing students to connect with others while continuing to progress in their lifelong language learning journey. There is something for everyone including webinars, conversation groups, skill workshops and activities such as cooking, wine tasting, yoga and arts and crafts.  We are currently offering them in English, German, Spanish, Dutch, French, Mandarin, Japanese and Thai.

If your learners haven't attended one yet, we ask you to recommend that they give them a try. You can check out the options hereStudents can register using the appropriate link and 30 minutes to 1 hour will be deducted from their language training allotment, depending on their selection.  If you're interested in facilitating an Experience, let us know! We're eager to hear your ideas.

We put together some special language experiences just for you – our Global LT teachers!  This is an excellent opportunity to meet and socialize with other teachers and try these fun experiences yourself. We recommend you select a language you can participate in as a learner. If you have any questions, please contact your Talent Success Consultant or email  VirtualEvents@Global-LT.com .
